Established in 1919, Amarillo Country Club is recognized as "one of the finest golf courses west of Fort Worth." The club's long history includes hosting several large state and national tournaments. The 1951 Texas P.G.A. was won by Texas golf legend Byron Nelson. The Club hosted two L.P.G.A. tournaments in 1966, and again in 1967. Many of the game's greatest female players tested the tree-lined fairways of Amarillo Country Club, with hall of famed Kathy Whitworth capturing the inaugural 1966 event.
Originally constructed with sand greens. It was later converted to grass greens in August 1928 and was the first of its kind in West Texas. In 1930, the course was converted from Bermuda grass to Bentgrass and became one of the first courses to have irrigation in West Texas.
The 1990 Amarillo Open featured the best players on the Ben Hogan Tour, many of whom have gone on to P.G.A. Tour success. Names like Maggert, Lehman, and Daly contended for the title, which was eventually won by former All-American Lindy Miller.
Amarillo Country Club features both a men's golf association and ladies' golf association whose mutual goal is promoting the great game of golf. The golf program at Amarillo Country Club is headed up by PGA Head Professional Zack Vinson, and features a qualified staff ready to assist the members and their quests in learning and enjoying the game.
The facility at ACC features a championship 18-hole layout which was completely renovated in 2012 by 5 time PGA Tour winner D. A. Weibring and Golf Course Architect Steve Wolfard. The course is tree lined with lush cool season fairways and Bentgrass greens. The club also features a fine driving range and practice facility, a fleet of 60 golf carts, and a well stocked pro shop ready to meet the needs of all who come to play. The Tournament Schedule includes Club Championships for men, ladies, and juniors. Other events are sponsored by the MGA and LGA. Members enjoy many privileges at ACC and all rules and procedures can be found in the back of the club directory or by contacting the Golf Professional staff at (806) 355-5021.
